How Should I Begin Tai Chi?

Begin with one small movement, a comfortable stance, and enough time to notice.

01

The Question

Do I need to learn a whole sequence before I can begin? What if I am stiff, unfit, or worried about getting the movements wrong?

Begin where you are. Your first task is to notice how you stand and move, then explore a little more ease.

02

Understand

A long sequence gives you many things to remember. One small movement gives you room to pay attention. In this approach, we begin by recognising unnecessary effort: gripping the floor, lifting the shoulders, holding the breath, or trying to make the body look correct.

Choose an ordinary, comfortable stance. You do not need a low position or a wide step. Keep your breathing natural. Let attention be gentle enough that you can notice something without immediately trying to fix everything.

A short practice that you can return to is a useful beginning. There is no need to finish feeling exhausted.

03

Try It

  1. Stand on a clear, level surface near a stable support. Place your feet at a comfortable width. Sit on a firm chair if standing is uncomfortable.
  2. Pause for a moment. Let your breathing remain natural. Notice the contact beneath you and the space around your shoulders.
  3. Let the intention to move arise, and allow your hands to move a little forward. Notice whether your shoulders tighten before the movement begins. Keep the movement small and comfortable.
  4. Allow your hands to return. Notice whether your shoulders, chest, or jaw were working harder than needed.
  5. Repeat three times, then stop. Give yourself a moment to notice how you feel.

Keep the movement small. Stop if it causes pain, dizziness, or a feeling of instability.

04

Notice

Was there a moment when trying harder made the movement less comfortable? Could you do a little less and remain supported?

You do not need a special sensation. Noticing a familiar habit is already useful learning.
